Will's Sports Blog: Marlins must make big splash

MIAMI – The big free agent names are out there. Those would be Albert Pujols, Prince Fielder and Jose Reyes. All are on the Marlins radar, and simply put, with a new stadium coming, the Fish MUST sign one of these players.

According to numerous reports, the team has already reached out to the representative for Reyes. Calls to Pujols and Fielder have also already come or will come soon. Plus, the team is sending a large contingent to the Dominican Republic on Thursday to attend a private workout from Cuban slugger Yoennis Cespedes. The 26-year-old centerfielder defected from Cuba over the summer, and he's one of the best home run hitters to ever play in Cuba. That's saying a lot. Cespedes is said to be looking for a contract in the range of 25-30 million dollars. The fact the Marlins would send such a big group, including owner Jeffrey Loria, to see him workout, just shows you how willing the team is to spend money this offseason.

That's sweet music to the ears of Marlins fans who have watched the team bypass big moves over the last few years. The promise has always been the moves would come when the new stadium arrives. Well, with manager Ozzie Gullien in the mix, and that new stadium debuting next season, the soon-to-be Miami Marlins are ready to make a splash.
