An idea to merge sixth- through eighth-graders into some Miami-Dade high schools died on the vine this week, but the fact that the school district would even consider such a move is concerning.

The protests of parents and students led to the district withdrawing the proposal. It was meant to save money, but parents already know what research shows: The middle school early teen years are among the most challenging for students developmentally and socially.

Imagine those students as the youngest in a school population. In fact, in high school, some of the upper-grade students are actually young adults.

The social environment of middle schoolers are critical to their education.
