WPLG Editorial: The marketing of Trayvon Martin (4/8/12)
As our state and our country grapple with the circumstances surrounding the death of the unarmed teen shot by a neighborhood watch volunteer, an ugly phenomenon is taking shape: the marketing of Trayvon Martin.
Martin has sparked a movement, and like any movement, there are symbols and icons: the teen's picture, his hoodie, the Skittles candy he carried, the slogans like, "Justice for Trayvon."
Around the country, opportunists are using those things to cash in on the crowds looking for ways to show their support.
Martin's parents have filed trademark applications. They say they intend to head off the inappropriate use of his name and image, but that can only go so far.
Profiting off pain is just wrong.
