Broward Animal Care seeks pet foster parents

Litters of orphaned puppies and kittens in need of help

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Orphaned kittens and puppies need your help.

Broward County Animal Care is asking residents with time on their hands to lend a helping hand to very young kittens and puppies that have come into the shelter without their mother. The youngsters, sometimes only days old, must be bottle fed in order to survive.

"We currently need residents who are able to bottle feed puppies and kittens which cannot eat on their own," said Tracie Rawls, foster coordinator, Broward County Animal Care. "The kittens and puppies must be fed around the clock every two-to-three hours in order to stay healthy and grow."

Animal Care will teach prospective Foster Parents how to bottle feed and will provide the necessary formula and bottles. Foster Parents must be able to commit the time and care to ensure the health and survival of the foster pet. In addition, parents are also required to bring the litter into the shelter's clinic for any scheduled veterinary visits.

Foster Parents who are interested in adopting any of the pets in their care may do so once the foster care process is complete and the puppy or kitten is deemed healthy and old enough to be adopted.

Applicants must be 18 years of age and a Broward County resident to apply to become an Animal Care Foster Parent. In addition, a Foster Care Parent Application must be completed and approved by Broward County Animal Care.
