FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -

On Saturday, February 18, up to 75 English Bulldogs from Florida and other states will gather at TY Park for the 2012 Bullympics, an annual tradition that benefits the bulldog rescue group Buddies Thru Bullies. Registration begins at 10 a.m.

Owners will guide their bulldogs through an obstacle course, modified for the breed’s unique “portly” shape. And no bribe is banned; owners may use whatever means necessary to get their bullies moving, including treats and favorite squeaky toys.

Spectators can cheer on their favorite competitor as the bulldogs waddle their way around the shaded course. Buddies Thru Bullies volunteers will be on hand to assist bulldogs on the course, run a silent auction and raffle, or just mingle with owners who want to brag about their bulldog’s shenanigans.

“This breed is so special in that each bulldog is like a 2-year-old. They never grow up,” says Donna Subramanian, Buddies Thru Bullies president. “They love to come here and play, meet other bulldogs, and if so inclined, do the course. This is all just for fun, and the best part is that all proceeds go to helping us care for abandoned, abused or unwanted bulldogs so that we can get them ready to find their forever homes.”

New this year is the invitation to all French Bulldogs, or “Frenchies.” There is a moderate registration fee ($15) for all competitors, and spectators can watch for only the park entrance fee of $1.50.

Buddies Thru Bullies is a not-for-profit English Bulldog rescue organization. We rescue, rehabilitate and rehome abandoned, abused and neglected English Bulldogs. We begin by providing for their physical, medical and emotional needs and ultimately unite them with their forever families through caring and informed volunteer rescue efforts. Buddies Thru Bullies aims to make a life-changing difference for the dogs in our program, reduce pet overpopulation and educate the public about the special joys and responsibilities of owning an English Bulldog.
