Family searches for missing tortoise
'Legacy' went missing September 8
A family in Palmetto Bay is searching for their missing pet tortoise.
Legacy, a 90-pound, spur-thighed tortoise, was born more than 20 years ago. His owners have already written Legacy into their will. They're leaving him to their children.
The family said Legacy has been missing since Sept. 8.
“My husband said he thought he heard boys, kids playing outside. [He] woke up, but thought he was dreaming and went back to sleep,” said Sharon Haxton, Legacy’s owner. “I’m just hoping it wasn’t somebody that picked him up just to kill him or sell him or destroy him, whatever, for the shell. I’m just hoping they take care of him.”
Legacy has been the family pet for 20 years. He’s been a pet for her three now-grown children.
Legacy is a bit of a celebrity in the neighborhood, which explains why his disappearance has folks in the area a bit shell-shocked.
“People will steal anything," said neighbor Mike Fulford. “Everybody went by and looked at it. It was like a walking coffee table.”
While slow and steady may win the race, Sharon is hoping whoever has Legacy returns him fast.
