FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -

The Humane Society of South Mississippi is not taking any chances with Isaac heading in their direction. The shelter, located in Gulfport, sent dogs and cats to North Shore Animal League in New York, the Atlanta Humane Society in Georgia and 27 dogs to the Humane Society of Broward County.

The dogs left for South Florida at 11 p.m. Monday. The 775 mile journey ended Tuesday afternoon.

"Sadly, they were given up by their families prior to Isaac arriving in Gulfport, Mississippi," said Cherie Wachter with the Humane Society of Broward County. "Hopefully, everyone that has a pet in that area has prepared, and if they're evacuating, they're taking their pets with them, they're not leaving them behind.

After arriving in South Florida, the dogs will be given the opportunity to rest from their journey, and may be available for adoption as early as Wednesday.
