Most people don’t have enough space in their mouth for their wisdom teeth, so they have them removed.  According to the Mayo Clinic, wisdom teeth usually surface in teenagers and young adults between the ages of 17 and 25. Others never develop wisdom teeth.

The medical procedure is often completed in the dentist’s office. However, if you are likely to have complications the surgeons might prefer to operate in a hospital.

Your dentist will give you a local anesthetic and a general anesthetic, especially if more than one tooth is being removed.  The anesthesia prevents pain during the procedure and will cause you to fall asleep.

After surgery it is important to relax and avoid strenuous physical activity, if possible, since this can prolong bleeding.  This can also cause dry socket, an inflammation caused if the protective blood clot is lost too soon.

It is important to avoid using straws and to rinse your mouth with warm salt water to prevent infection.
