64-year-old man fatally struck by car on West Sunrise Boulevard

Driver cooperating with investigators

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A 64-year-old man was fatally struck by a car Tuesday morning in Fort Lauderdale, authorities said.

Police said a car struck Steven West shortly before 7 a.m. on West Sunrise Boulevard.

Police said the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

West's wife, Gwendolyn West, stumbled upon the scene on her way to work and was given her husband's personal belongings.

"I'm shaken, I'm in shock -- this is horrible," she told Local 10 News reporter Terrell Forney. "I just had a bad feeling in my stomach -- the pit of my stomach."

Authorities told Gwendolyn West that the crash appeared to be an accident.

The driver has not been charged.

"He was a Marine. He's been in Vietnam. He served his country," Gwendolyn West said. "He was a hard-working guy. He was just a good guy."

West Sunrise Boulevard, between Northwest Fourth and Fifth avenues, was shut down during the investigation.
