Crash kills 5-year-old boy on I-95 in Pompano Beach

Infant hospitalized in critical condition

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A 5-year-old boy is dead after a crash on Interstate 95 in Pompano Beach.

It happened Wednesday night in the northbound lanes of I-95 approaching Atlantic Boulevard.

The Florida Highway Patrol says a 2002 Honda driven by Christopher Lorenzo, 16, crashed into the back of a 1998 Mercury Mountaineer with two adults and two children inside. The Mercury overturned into the right shoulder of the roadway.

A 5-year-old boy, later identified as Mario Hernandez, was taken to North Broward Health, where he died.

A 2-month-old, identified as Hasmine Cardozo, was taken to Broward Health in critical condition.

Lorenzo and the two adults in the Mountaineer, identified as Mario Cardozo Hernandez, 39, and Maritza Elizabeth Hernandez, 31, suffered minor injuries.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
