Good Samaritans save driver from burning car on Turnpike in Boca Raton

Rescue captured on cellphone video

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Good Samaritans went to great lengths last Thursday to rescue a driver from a burning car in Boca Raton.

Drivers pulled over about 6 p.m. on Florida's Turnpike as a driver was trapped inside his car that was filling up with smoke after he crashed into a wall.

"The man that was in the car seemed passed out," Adam Turetsky, who filmed the rescue, said. "His foot was on the acceleration, so the car continued being pushed."

Turetsky said the car's tires were popping and the smoke kept getting thicker.

"So one of the men grabs a baseball bat and together they work to get the driver out," he said.

Turetsky  said one man broke the window with the bat and another man unlocked the car and shut it off.

The rescue happened in the southbound lanes of the Turnpike near the Glades Road Exit.

"There's definitely good people out there," Turetsky said.

Police have not released the driver's condition. The crash remains under investigation.
