SUNRISE, Fla. – A mother and two children were injured Tuesday night in a crash near Markham Park.
The pickup truck that the mother was driving rolled over during the crash, Sunrise police said.
Cellphone video captured a group of Good Samaritans rushing to pull the three victims from the wreckage.
"I was just in total shock," Philip Abed, who witnessed the crash, said.
Abed said the Toyota Tundra nearly slammed into the back of his car, but swerved at the last second.
"The car hit a sidewalk, hit a bush, then hit a tree, then rolled over and hit another tree," Abed said. "That's when the airbags deployed."
Abed jumped out of his car and his father, who was riding with him, started filming.
Abed said he yelled, "There's a baby, dad!" before he pulled out a 2-year-old girl from the back window of the mangled truck.
Pamela Thompson, 39, her 2-year-old daughter and her 2-month-old son were taken to Broward Health Medical Center, where they were kept overnight for observation, Officer Michelle Eddy said.
Thompson remains at the hospital in fair condition. Her children's conditions have not been released.
"The 2-year-old was just pretty much covered in blood, and the 2-month-baby (had) a little cut on his face," Abed said.
The camera continued to roll as Thompson was pulled to safety and emergency crews arrived at the scene to take over.
Eddy said speed appears to be a factor in the crash.
The Broward Sheriff's Office Child Protection Investigation Section has also opened an investigation into the crash and has no prior contact with the family.
While police believe speed was a factor, all 2007-2010 models of the Toyota Tundra were recalled for cases of the accelerator getting stuck. It's unclear whether that happened in this case.
