Pickup truck strikes pedestrians at Oakland Park bus stop

2 taken to Broward Health Medical Center with serious injuries

OAKLAND PARK, Fla. – A pickup truck crashed into two people Friday who were waiting at a bus stop in Oakland Park, authorities said.

An Oakland Park Fire Rescue representative said the driver of the pickup lost control shortly before 2 p.m. and struck a light pole and two people who were at the bus stop in the 1500 block of East Commercial Boulevard.

Authorities said one of the men who was struck was in a wheelchair.

"I just looked out the window. There were numerous people there to help and I saw the guy in the motorized wheelchair on his side. I didn't see anything else," witness Jennifer Cassidy said. "So then I learned when the girl from the shop went out and looked -- she said there was another guy on the bench and apparently, I guess, one of the guys lost their leg or was going to. I mean, it was pretty bad."

Both men were taken to Broward Health Medical Center with serious injuries. Broward Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Joy Oglesby said the injuries were non-life-threatening.

The driver of the pool cleaning service truck appeared to be distraught and was also eventually taken to a hospital.

Authorities said the light pole fell into the street, causing deputies to open only one eastbound lane to traffic on East Commercial Boulevard.

Oglesby said drivers should avoid traveling east on East Commercial Boulevard, between North Dixie Highway and Northeast 15th Avenue.

Oglesby said the driver remained at the scene.

Traffic homicide detectives are investigating the crash.
