Travel warning issued for popular Mexican tourist locations

WASHINGTON – The U.S. State Department has issued a travel warning for popular tourist destinations in Mexico.

The warning covering locations such as Cancun, Cabo San Lucas, Cozumel and Playa del Carmel was issued due to the increase in violent crimes committed by criminal organizations in the areas.

U.S. citizens have been victims of homicide, kidnapping, and robbery in Mexican regions, including those that are popular with American tourists.

The Los Angeles Times reports tourist regions normally insulated from drug war violence have now seen an surge in killings. NPR claims 2017 is expected to be the most violent in Mexico's history since the country's revolution.

23 of Mexico's 31 states are now covered in the agency's warning.

Baja, California and Baja California Sur are also included in the travel warning,
