FLORIDA WILDFIRES

Detention Center, Prison Evacuated For Wildfire

UPDATED: 8:08 am EDT May 20, 2008

A state prison and federal detention center were evacuated Monday as a massive wildfire continued to burn in the Everglades.

The incident commander for the Florida Division of Forestry asked both correctional facilities to evacuate as a precaution. Inmates at the Everglades Correctional Institution, located at 1601 SW 187th Ave., and the Krome Detention Center, located at 18201 SW 12th St., could be seen filing out of the facilities.

Severe Weather Advisories

The fire was about 10 miles from the state-run Everglades Correctional Institution, which evacuated 1,753 inmates. The Krome Detention Center, a federal immigration correctional facility, evacuated about 535 detainees. They were being taken to other facilities, though it was unclear where.

Smoke and fog advisories were issued for Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Glades counties. In Miami-Dade and Broward counties, health officials warned people with respiratory problems to stay indoors.

Firefighters were using seven helicopters and two air tankers to fight the fire from the air. Five crews with 20 members each were on the ground battling the blaze.

The blaze also is burning in the only known habitat for the endangered Cape Sable Seaside Sparrow. Water flow was increased to the area, and state officials say the birds appear to be "in good shape."

The 36,000-acre blaze was about 30 percent contained.

Officials were concerned that rain in the forecast Monday could worsen conditions on Lake Okeechobee after five wildfires burned over 25,000 acres in the dry lakebed.

Rain could bring lightning and high winds that could help the fires spread across the exposed lake bottom.

Brushfires have been burning in Florida since the beginning of May. Already almost 52,000 acres have burned across the state, more than 32,000 in the Everglades. In Everglades National Park, another 21,000 acres were on fire Sunday.
