New Hurricane Products To Survive Season

POSTED: 12:17 pm EDT May 27, 2008

Getting ready for the hurricane season means arming yourself with the right supplies.

Every year at the National Hurricane Conference in Orlando, vendors show up with all kinds of products to show off some of the latest innovations in storm preparedness.

Miami native Tony Diaz showed off his temporary self-adhesive tarps that sell for $60 a sheet.

"It'll last a year on the roof and withstand winds up to 110 mph," said Diaz. "If you just want to keep it in your hurricane prep kit, it'll last five years in storage."

Another hurricane-related item with a five-year shelf life is Aqua Blox drinking water, which is processed and packaged differently than regular bottled water.

"The packaging and the equipment is commercially sterile," explained Charles Schooley, a spokesman for the West Palm Beach-based company. "The packaging also has seven layers, which doesn't allow any sunlight or air contact, so no bacteria can regenerate."

If you want to turn your bathtub into a source of safe drinking water, there are a couple of products on the market.

The Water Bob and Aqua Pod are large plastic bags the size of a standard bathtub with a special nozzle that fits on a tub faucet. Once filled, the nozzle can be sealed to keep bacteria and other debris from getting in the bag, keeping the water safe for drinking and cooking.

Having a warm meal if the power goes out is as simple as opening Heater Meals. The pre-packaged meals come with a special solution that can warm food in a matter of minutes.

And if you're tired of those noisy gas-filled generators, try the Solar Stik. This eco-friendly device relies on the sun and wind to generate power. The devices sell for a starting price of about $4,000.
