MIAMI – The tropics remain quiet over the Atlantic Basin, and tropical cyclone development is not expected for at least the next five days. November is typically not very active with only around one tropical storm every two years on average.
So far this hurricane season has produced twelve tropical storms, two of which were hurricanes, and no major hurricanes. A more robust parameter is the Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) Index. The ACE Index accounts for the number of storms, the intensity, and the duration of storms. Technically, it is the sum of the squares of the maximum wind speed at six-hour intervals for all tropical storms and hurricanes.

It looks like this year will go down in the record books as one of the most inactive in recent years. The 2013 ACE Index to date is 28.55. This is the lowest ACE in 30 years and the fifth lowest since 1970. Most of the seasonal forecasters were predicting an above-average year which has not come even close to happening -- thankfully.
