On this date, a major blow to the U.S. Third Fleet occurred on this date in 1945 as a typhoon moved into the Philippine Sea where the fleet was positioned. Wind gusts to 142 mph and extremely high seas destroyed 146 aircraft and three destroyers. The storm also took the lives of 80 sailors.
