On this date, ice has blocked the Mississippi River at New Orleans only two times in recorded history. The first time occurred on this date in 1784 when ice floes were spotted in the Gulf of Mexico after passing through the river. The second time this occurred was during the Great Arctic Outbreak of 1899.
