Tornado destroys SW Florida home

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -

The National Weather Service says a tornado touched down in southwest Florida. 

Preliminary damage includes a Port Charlotte house with significant roof damage and an apartment complex with some roof damage. 

Meteorologist Todd Barron says Friday's tornado had winds of about 95 miles per hour and was likely spawned as storms moved onshore while a cold front moved south. 

The Red Cross Disaster Assessment teams reported minor damage to the surrounding areas after the tornado touched down around 5:45 a.m. 

Charlotte County officials are reporting downed power lines and toppled trees. 

No injuries or fatalities have been reported.
