MIAMI – Airports in South Florida are experiencing delays due to thunderstorms in the area.
All inbound flights to Miami International Airport and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport were being held at their origin until shortly before 5:30 p.m. because of the weather.
As of 4:30 p.m., MIA had 47 delays and eight cancelations. FLL had 40 delayed flights and one cancellation.
"I'm just hoping that we're safe in the air and, you know, I'm just hoping everything works out, but the weather is really bad," Lee Johnson, who was traveling out of MIA, told Local 10 News.
Most passengers said they were fine with the delays because it was clear that it wasn't safe to fly.
"Better safe than sorry, and I even texted that to my daughter earlier," Joy Scott, who was waiting to pick up her children from the airport, said. "She said, 'We're still on the tarmac here. We're waiting because of the storms.' I said, 'I'd rather you get here in one piece and a little bit late.'"

A flood advisory was in effect for northern Miami-Dade County until 5:15 p.m and a severe thunderstorm warning was canceled at 12:53 p.m.
The thunderstorm warning was in effect for southeastern Broward and north-central Miami-Dade counties.
Despite the warning being lifted, meteorologists say small hail, gusty winds and heavy rain were likely as the storm moves through west metro areas of Broward County.
At 1:30 p.m., more than 2,000 Florida Power & Light customers were without power in Broward County and more than 3,000 were without power in Miami-Dade County.
A flood advisory is in effect for Broward County until 6 p.m.
