Clean up underway after tornado touches down in Broward County

Possible tornado sweeps through Pompano Beach neighborhood

COCONUT CREEK, Fla. – Residents and business owners were cleaning up Thursday morning after an EF-1 tornado touched down in Coconut Creek on Wednesday. Meanwhile, homeowners in one Pompano Beach neighborhood believe a tornado may have touched down Thursday morning, leaving a trail of damage behind.

Local 10 News reporter Ben Kennedy was in one Coconut Creek neighborhood, where crews picked up and hauled out trees that were uprooted by the tornado.

"I've been through several hurricanes down here, but when you're standing on your back porch and see trees flying around. When the biggest gust of wind came, I thought it was going to suck my sliding door out of my kitchen," homeowner Cindy Paz said.

Paz's avocado tree was torn to pieces and piled up on her front yard after the tornado touched down with winds up to 100 mph, leaving a path of damage nearly 2 1/2 miles long.

A video posted to Instagram shows a car being turned over on the Turnpike shortly before the tornado took aim at Broward College's North Campus, where several cars were damaged.

"It was something out of a movie. A lot of tree movement. It was scary. It was scary," freshman Joao Carvalho said.

Despite the scary moment, no injuries were reported on campus.

About 10:40 a.m. Thursday, strong winds knocked down trees and fences in Pompano Beach, but the National Weather Service has not confirmed whether a tornado actually touched down in the area.

"They lost their exhaust fan, the neighbor lost his fence, so we got a pretty good mess," homeowner Larry Jones said. "(The) neighbor across the street lost his fence. Mother Nature must like us."

Another homeowner said their backyard shed flew over their home and landed across the street on Northeast 25th Court and 13th Avenue, just north of the Pompano Beach Golf Course.

Photos posted on social media by Sea Tow also show a boat sinking at a private dock in Pompano Beach.

According to Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Mark Wysocky, incidents related to Wednesday's tornado were reported on the streets of Broward County.

Wysocky said a 2015 Ford F150 and 2015 Ford box truck were flipped over on the Coconut Creek Parkway Ramp.

The front portion of a 2000 Freightliner tractor trailer was also ripped off on the Coconut Creek Parkway Ramp.

According to Wysocky, a man from Orlando was driving a 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe was south on Coconut Creek Parkway when his car was blown to the northbound side.

A 2015 Nissan Murano was also traveling south and blown into a 2014 GMC pick-up truck.
