Tropical Depression No. 9 could become tropical storm

Tropical Storm Hermine may form Tuesday

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – Tropical Depression No. 9 was churning in the southeastern Gulf of Mexico on Monday night and could become a tropical storm Tuesday.

The system was becoming better organized at 11 p.m. when the National Hurricane Center forecasters released their advisory.

The system is expected to track over the Gulf of Mexico, eventually making a turn toward the northeast, which would put portions of the Gulf Coast of Florida in its sights for a landfall.

A tropical storm or hurricane watch may be required for part of the Florida Gulf Coast on Tuesday morning.

The system will not score a direct hit on Broward and Miami-Dade counties or the Keys, but it will continue to keep South Florida connected to a tropical feed of moisture. The potential for rain will last for most of the week.

National Hurricane Center forecasters said total rain accumulations of 3-7 inches are possible over much of the Florida peninsula through Thursday.
