On this date in 2001 Erin became the first hurricane of the season. It was the third latest hurricane to form in the Atlantic since 1966 behind Diana on September 10th, 1984 and Gustav on September 11th, 2002.
Although 2001 got off to a late start it was still an above average season. The season ended with a total of 15 named storms, 9 hurricanes of which 4 were major storms. That is well above the average of 12 named storms, 6 hurricanes and 3 major storms.
Though we have not yet had a hurricane in 2013, it is still too early to write off the season. As Max Mayfield always says, “It only takes one!”
