BOCA RATON, Fla. – Damage done to a Boca Raton community during Thursday morning's storm was the work of a tornado.
The National Weather Service said Thursday afternoon that an EF1 tornado touched down at the Woodfield Hunt Club, uprooting trees, toppling tree limbs and damaging homes.
David Kahn told Local 10 News he was getting ready to take his daughter to school about 7:30 a.m. when he heard "kind of a whistling" and saw "two trees go flying out there."
Kahn said he stepped outside 10 minutes later and noticed the damage in the neighborhood. He said some trees came down on top of his house, but nobody in his family was injured.
The damage was worse for neighbor Tim Moylan.
"The whole front of my house, it looks like the roof is completely gone, so that could be very expensive," Moylan said.
Local 10 News meteorologist Julie Durda said a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for portions of Palm Beach County and northern Broward County at about the time that the damage was reported.
Durda said the storm moved east to west and collided with winds from the south.
The National Weather Service said the tornado packed winds of 90 to 100 mph.
"Fortunately, no one got hurt," Moylan said.
