Remember hurricane climatology

Most active part of season from middle of August to late October

MIAMI – Some people are surprised that the Atlantic hurricane season has produced only one named storm to date.

According to the National Hurricane Center website, long-term averages indicate that we don't see the second named tropical storm until around the beginning of August.

The graphic from the NHC shows the number of storms and hurricanes per 100 years. We can see that June and July are typically not very active.

Based on climatology, the most active part of the hurricane season is from the middle of August to late October, with the peak around Sept. 10.

Given the most active part of the hurricane season is ahead of us, we still have time to make sure that our individual hurricane plans are up-to-date and executable.

I always liked the quote from Winston Churchill during World War II when he said, "He who fails to plan is planning to fail." That philosophy should also apply to the battle against the hurricane.
