Local 10 News chief meteorologist Betty Davis says Friday's temperatures could shatter records

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – South Florida is finally getting a taste of winter.

Overnight temperatures in South Florida are expected to be the coldest since December 2010.

South Florida residents woke up Thursday morning to temperatures in the 50s and upper 40s. Temperatures even dipped into the 50s as far south as Key West.

"That's when you know that this is a very strong cold front," Local 10 News meteorologist Julie Durda said.

It's expected to be even colder Thursday night and early Friday morning.

A freeze warning is in effect for portions of Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. Friday. A wind chill advisory is also in effect for all of South Florida from 11 p.m. Thursday to 9 a.m. Friday.

"I think this may be parka weather," Local 10 News chief meteorologist Betty Davis said.

Lows are expected to dip into the 30s in Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

"We will likely shatter some records come tomorrow," Davis said.

The record low for Feb. 20 is 40 degrees for Fort Lauderdale in 1960, 42 degrees for Miami in 1972 and 52 degrees for Key West in 1958.

Cold-weather shelters will be open in Miami, Hollywood and Pompano Beach on Thursday night for those homeless looking to escape the cold.

Miami-Dade County Animal Services is reminding residents to keep all pets indoors.
