Dania Beach mobile home residents consider leaving ahead of Hurricane Matthew

Weiner's Mobile Home Park residents not taking any chances

DANIA BEACH, Fla. ā€“ Residents at Weiner's Mobile Home Park in Dania Beach aren't taking any chances in the event that Hurricane Matthew leaves its mark on South Florida.

"I'm ready to leave and, if it does come, I'd much rather be somewhere else," resident Jimmy Abrams told Local 10 News reporter Janine Stanwood.

Residents spent much of Wednesday picking up debris, making last-minute repairs to their mobile homes and deciding whether they should stay or go.

Many of them have been through this before.

"I've been here long enough to know that staying in this thing ain't gonna be safe," resident Mike Jakes said.

Broward County issued a voluntary evacuation for residents living in low-lying areas and mobile homes.

Amy Smith wasn't living in South Florida when Hurricane Wilma made landfall in 2005, so she isn't sure how her home will hold up in a storm.

"I'm gonna get rid of all the stuff that's out here," she said. "I've got a storage shed, so I'm lucky in that aspect."
