MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Unwilling to drive through high standing water Wednesday afternoon, Natalie Rubio, and several other drivers, were stranded in a shopping plaza, off the Turnpike and Southwest 312th Street in Homestead.
"We're waiting for the water to go down, because we're kind of like skeptical to take our cars through," Rubio said at about 6:30 p.m. "We don't want anything to happen to them. We've been here since like 3:30 p.m."
A flood advisory was issued for central Miami-Dade County, and according to the National Weather Service, about 5 inches of rain reported in the Homestead and Florida City area by the end of the day.
Paola, who pulled over in the plaza due to the rain, said she debated whether to roll the dice and drive.
"I'm trying to figure out which exit to go through," Paola, who didn't give her last name, said. "If [I] go that way, I don't think my car is going to make it."
On the Turnpike, rain caused traffic to come to a standstill. Several accidents were blamed on the wet roads and poor visibility.
Homestead police had advised drivers to stay off the roadways if possible because some traffic signals had been affected by power outages in the area. Power to those areas has since been restored.
As for Paola, she decided to drive through the water and was able to make it home.
