Santa Barbara Zoo staff welcomed a baby giraffe this week -- several weeks early.
Audrey the giraffe gave birth Wednesday to a calf, KEYT reported. The mom and her female calf are bonding privately in the giraffe barn.
Both giraffes have been doing well.
“This was the fastest birth Audrey has had,” Michele Green, curator of mammals, told KEYT. “It was smooth and progressed well, and the calf stood up and was nursing in only two hours. Audrey is calm and this calf appears to be figuring things out very quickly. We couldn't be happier for mom and baby.”
Visitors will be able to view the pair next week, weather permitting, KEYT reported.
The 6-foot-1 calf weighed about 180 pounds during her first medical exam Thursday, KEYT reported.
