POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. (KMOV) -- A man is in custody after officers found a box of eight abandoned puppies in Poplar Bluff.

Poplar Bluff Animal Control Officers responded to the intersection of Harper and Sanders streets on Wednesday regarding a box of abandoned puppies.

When officers arrived, they discovered eight pit bull-mix puppies, which appeared malnourished and not of age to be weaned from their mother.

Animal Control officers requested assistance from the Poplar Bluff Police Department to investigate the incident.

During the investigation, Animal Control officers received information pertaining to a possible suspect responsible for leaving the puppies.

Poplar Bluff Police responded to the 1000 block of North 2nd St. Officers said Daryl Scarlet had the mother of the puppies at his home, along with one puppy from the same litter. Scarlet was questioned and initially denied abandoning the puppies.

After a short time, Scarlet admitted he was responsible for leaving the puppies, police said.

Scarlet was arrested and faces animal neglect charges.

The mother and additional puppy were released to the Poplar Bluff Animal Shelter.

Scarlet also signed a release of ownership form, releasing rights of the abandoned puppies to the Poplar Bluff Animal Shelter.
