A puppy is being credited with saving his owner's girlfriend from a man who tried to rape her.

Maya Fairweather, 18, was walking Apollo, her boyfriend's 5-month-old pit bull in Brooklyn, New York, around 10 p.m. Monday, according to the New York Post.

Fairweather was wearing headphones and said she felt somebody tug on them from behind, reports the Post.

The man then pushed Fairweather to the ground and tried to pull off her pants, according to the Post.

That's when Apollo came to the rescue.

"He came up and bit him on the leg," Fairweather told the Post. “I heard him say, [an expletive] and I was able to run away. I ran across the street. ...He was protective. I think it would’ve been a lot worse. I wouldn’t have been so lucky."

Police are still searching for the assailant.
