'Blank Box' ensures thieves don't get away with packages left on doorstep

TACOMA, Wash. – A new invention called the Blank Box makes sure thieves don't get away with your holiday packages.

"I got tired of all my packages coming up missing," the device's creator, Jaireme Barrow, told CNN. "I'd be at work, and then I'd get home and they wouldn't be on my front porch. And I'd watched my surveillance and see someone running away with them."

The Blank Box looks like the average package, but any thief who tries to steal it will get a big scare, ABC affiliate WTXL reported.

Barrow built his first box last December, using an empty box, shotgun blanks and fishing wire. When picked up, the box shoots off a loud noise.

He said he came up with the idea after catching thief after thief on his surveillance cameras stealing multiple deliveries from his front porch in Tacoma, Washington.

"I wanted a way to scare them safely," Barrow said. "When you scare them, hopefully they're going to drop the package and run away and never come back."

He has since refined his invention, and a year later, his Blank Box has turned into big business.

"It's all hands-on, made in America. Every one of these was built with love," Barrow said.

Barrow said he tests the devices himself for safety.
