SOUTH MIAMI, Fla. – A street in South Miami was renamed Friday in honor of a World War II veteran who has lived in the neighborhood for nearly 70 years.
Southwest 63rd Court is now Mitchel Chockla Court.
Relatives and friends came together Friday for the unveiling of the street sign.
Chockla has lived in the same house on the street for 67 years, and the honor comes because of his great service to the U.S.
"Amazing, amazing. I just can't get over how it happened, and I'm grateful to the city of South Miami," Chockla said. "It's embarrassing, in a way. I didn't expect all this, but it all went together well thanks to my daughter."
"My heart swells with pride for my father," Chockla's daughter told Local 10 News.
Loved ones who gathered to celebrate the tribute to the 96-year-old veteran found comfort in knowing that he is still here to witness the street being named after him.
"He's my hero," Chockla's daughter said.
