Single mother receives new furniture from El Dorado

Gift part of company's 50 Years, 50 Families campaign

MIAMI – A single mother from South Florida was shocked Friday when she learned that she would be receiving free furniture from El Dorado Furniture as part of the company's 50 Years, 50 Families campaign.

"It's our 50th anniversary, so imagine. We want to celebrate in a special way by giving back to the community that's supported the company since its early beginnings," Melissa Alonso, of El Dorado Furniture, said.

The El Dorado design team was on hand to help Vanessa Blanding, 29, choose the right pieces, including everything from living room, dining room and bedroom furniture.

She received the items less than a week later.

The family has a lot to smile about, but it's been a long journey.

Blanding and her two young sons have suffered incredible loss.

"In 2012, their father was murdered. I'm a single parent, so it's been difficult, but I've been making ends meet," Blanding said. "I'm doing my best, trying to keep them off the street and keeping them focused."

But the focus Wednesday was on the generous gift from El Dorado.

Blanding's children received new bunk beds, and the family’s old and torn sofa was replaced with a new sectional.

"Things have been rough, but this right here just lifts up my day," Blanding said. "If anything, this is a blessing."
