PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – With the help of Publix Super Markets, the Local 10 News' Day of Giving Thursday collected more than 13,000 pounds of food and about $15,000 in donations.
Local 10 News viewers will have donated more than 56,000 pounds of food, hundreds of toys and thousands of dollars in donations to nonprofits serving the homeless and needy in our community since the effort started in 2014.
From way before sunrise and way after sunset, our One & Only Local 10 News team of anchors and reporters were at select area Publix stores in Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe counties to greet guests and file live reports.
All donated items will benefit Farm Share, Miami Rescue Mission and Broward Outreach Centers, Edible Extras, Joshua's Heart, Manna Share-A-Meal, Make-A-Wish Veterans and Star of the Sea Outreach Mission in the Florida Keys.
The biggest donation Friday came from Petroleum Association Port Everglades, which donated a $10,400 check, which was given to Edible Extras at the Publix in Fort Lauderdale.
"I don't even know what to say. I'm blown away," Michelle Musselman, of Edible Extras, said. "This is just incredible, and with being an all-volunteer organization, every dime will go to help people. Thank you very much."
By 3:30 p.m., nearly 9,000 pounds of food had been collected, as well as more than $15,000 in cash and gift card donations.
