Miami Dade Economic Advocacy Trust (MDEAT) is seeking new action committee members to fill vacancies on its Economic Development Action Committee (EDAC), Housing Advocacy Committee (HAC) and Youth Action Committee (YAC).

Ideal candidates are seasoned, strategic thinkers with successful track records in housing, economic development, business development, banking, finance, criminal justice or law. They will have reputations of integrity and community service as well as possess knowledge, skills and expertise relevant to the position for which they are applying.

Rafael Soriano: The Artist As Mystic

The Artist As Mystic is the unprecedented retrospective of the Cuban Master Rafael Soriano featuring more than ninety of his paintings and drawings.  The artist’s full trajectory is explored, spanning three distinct periods: his early Cuban geometric abstract style, his transitional period in the 1960’s and 1970’s reminiscent of surrealist biomorphism, and closing with the luminous and mystical imagery of his mature period.

Rhythms in Conversation Percussion Workshop
Youth Enrichment Center

Time: 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. 

This is a community interactive percussion workshop for ages 11 and up. No experience needed.  Instruments provided.  Reservations required.

Students will be immersed in a musical journey that includes ancient rhythms sprung from the souls of vibrant cultures and carried by hand and heart from Africa to the Caribbean and the Americas.  Participants will learn percussion techniques that form the bedrock of contemporary music, in addition to learning history, geography, vocabulary, musical theory, ethnic studies and math associated with the rhythms taught.

The Epilepsy Foundation of Florida - Purple Hat Night Out

Time: 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. 

This event will take place during National Epilepsy Awareness Month, an annual period dedicated to educating individuals and communities about epilepsy. The cocktail-themed event will feature a purple carpet entrance where attendees are encouraged to wear and showcase purple hats to raise epilepsy awareness. Designer hats will be displayed at the event. Other event highlights include a silent auction, live music, DJ, and a special gallery style display of art created by children with epilepsy.   

Cost: Tickets $50 each or $100 for V.I.P.  All tickets include Hors d'oeuvres and cocktails.

Soaring: The Legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen in South Florida

The Miramar Cultural Trust sponsored the creation of an exhibition that explores the history and the continuing legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen. Created during World War II after years of campaigning by civil rights leaders, the Tuskegee Airmen represented a significant opportunity to disprove racist arguments about black inferiority and erode justifications for segregation, both in the military and in civilian life.

Non-profit Holy Cross Hospital is offering free healthy cooking classes to the community.  The classes will feature cooking demonstrations, food samples and take-home recipe cards for participants.   October’s class will focus on cooking with cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, cauliflower, and kale.

The Miami Book Fair – Street Fair

Time: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. 

The first Miami Book Fair, founded by Miami Dade College and community partners, took place in 1984. Since then, it has been recognized as the nation’s finest literary festival.  The highlight of the Street Fair is the Festival of Authors, with more than 450 authors reading and discussing their work, including the Latin American and Spanish authors who participate in the IberoAmerican Authors Program.  More than 250 publishers and booksellers exhibit and sell books, with special features like the antiquarians, who showcase signed first editions, original manuscripts and other collectibles.

Cost: Nov. 17:  Free, Nov. 18-19:  13 to 18 and over 62: $5, ages 12 & under: Free

Humane Society of Broward County Pit Stops

Bring your dog and support homeless pets.   The HSBC created Pit Stops to promote the adoption of “bully breed” dogs of which the HSBC and many other shelters often have surrendered.  These include the American pit bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, American bulldog and others.  The HSBC wants to educate our community and raise awareness of these often misunderstood bully breeds, in hopes of having them viewed in a more positive light.  There will be drink specials, raffles, a charity poker game and adoptable dogs.
