VA Secretary David Shulkin: Housing funding to reduce homeless population

When it comes to homeless veterans, Florida is considered problem area

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. ā€“ Dr. DavidĀ Shulkin, the Department of Veterans Affairs secretary, recently said the president's 2018 budget includes $1.7 billion to improve the VA's homelessness services.Ā

Florida will be among the states that will benefit from VA funding for problem areas, ShulkinĀ said. Most of the funding will go to California, where nearly one-fourth of all the homeless veterans live.Ā

The VA estimates there are about 40,000 veterans who are homeless in the United States. Shulkin is aiming to help some 25,000 homeless veterans.

The other states where the most homeless veterans live are Texas, New York, Colorado, Washington and Oregon.Ā
