Dozens arrested in South Beach during Memorial Day weekend

Miami Beach Police: 57 arrested Friday, Saturday morning

MIAMI BEACH, Fla.Traffic gridlock and a lack of parking will be the norm in South Beach during the Memorial Day Weekend.

Thousands of tourists are in town for "Urban Beach Week," a lineup of parties and concerts. The hip-hop and rap festival started in 1990, and it has grown into one of the largest in the country. It has also raised security concerns and prompted racial tensions

Law enforcement also turns out enforce. As of Saturday morning, Miami Beach police reported there were 57 arrests -- 54 were men and 3 were women. Only six were Miami Beach residents. And the majority of arrests were drug related. 

According to a source with the FBI they are on alert for pending warrants related to the "gangster rap" crowd, as some in the industry are known to launder dirty money.

There will be license plate readers on both MacArthur Causeway and the Julia Tuttle Causeway and more surveillance cameras. 

The Miami-Dade County Police Department will be helping the Miami Beach Police Department. And Miami Beach Police spokesman Ernesto Rodriguez said a squad will be looking for impaired drivers. 

"These officers won't be at a specific spot," Rodriguez said. "Instead, they will be all throughout Miami Beach."

TRAFFIC ALERTS

Miami Beach police is only allowing northbound traffic on Collins Avenue and southbound traffic on Washington AvenueOcean Drive will remain closed to cars. 

Tourists' access to residential areas between Collins Avenue and Alton Road will be limited at night. Police were encouraging residents to use Venetian Causeway.
