South Florida shoppers search for last-minute gifts

Late rush shopping continued Saturday at South Florida malls

Dolphin Mall in Miami-Dade's Doral neighborhood was busy Saturday afternoon.

With online shopping out of the question, shoppers were searching for last-minute Christmas gifts. Most South Florida shops were open to accommodate procrastinators.

Sara Stejuste said she doesn't really like online shopping anyway. She enjoys the shopping frenzy.

"I just like the atmosphere of when Christmas is here," Stejuste said. "Shopping with all of these people in the stores it's just so much better."

Stejuste is not the norm. December and November account for less than 21 percent of annual retail sales at physical stores and retail experts believe the number of shoppers going to stores on Christmas Eve will keep dropping.

Heather Jimenez said the traffic was lighter than she expected. The mall, she said, had more traffic on Christmas Eve on previous years.

"There's not a lot of people. We found parking pretty easily," Jimenez said. "We can get in and out of the stores without having to wait in long lines like last year and the previous year."

Dolphin Mall was set to close about 6 p.m.
