Miami children 'Shop with a Cop' for Christmas presents at Midtown Target store

98 children to benefit from this year's event

MIAMI – With a signal from Santa, dozens of Miami police officers paired off with children Wednesday morning to shop for holiday presents at the Midtown Target store.

It was the first shift for the Miami Police Department's "Shop with a Cop" event Wednesday. By day's end, 98 children will end up with Christmas presents.

"We find kids in the community that may or may not get a toy or other things for Christmas. We identify those kids, and they come out and shop with a cop," Maj. Esther Farmer said.

Police officers and children roamed the aisles with a $100 gift card in hand.

The experience not only brings a smile to the children's faces, but also warms the hearts of the police officers.

"Sometimes we see officers cry, because some of the kids -- you'd think they would pick toys and what not -- but sometimes they pick shoes and clothes and undergarments, and it can be heartbreaking to see kids at Christmas not thinking about toys, but picking things out for kids and family members," Farmer said. "It's great for us to get to know our community."
