South Florida schools work to help autistic students succeed

As Miami-Dade County prepares for the first day of class, the school district is also preparing education programs for its 5,000 students with autism.

"Each child is unique, each child has specific needs. We tailor that child's educations to their needs," said Angie Torres of Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

There are 65 schools in Miami-Dade County with classrooms equipped for students with autism, as well as seven autism-intensive academies. Among them is Citrus Grove Elementary School, where students with autism can get more one-on-one time with teachers, and the classrooms are equipped with technology that helps those students communicate more effectively.

Students with autism account for 1.4 percent of Miami-Dade County Public School students. The school district also offers programs to help parents continue their child's education at home.
