Shenandoah Middle School briefly evacuated after cellphone charger began smoking

No injuries reported

MIAMI – Shenandoah Middle School was evacuated Monday afternoon after authorities received reports that smoke was coming out of a classroom, Miami Fire Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll said.

Sky 10 was above the middle school at 1950 SW 19th St. at 2:20 p.m. and it appeared that students were heading back inside the school.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools spokesman John Schuster said a student was charging his cellphone in his backpack when it got too hot and began to smoke.

Schuster said the school was briefly evacuated as firefighters used fans to clear the air.

Local 10 News reporter Neki Mohan was at the school shortly after 3 p.m. as students were let out the school for the day at their usual time.

No injuries were reported.
