Toy gun causes brief scare at Florida City Elementary School

10-year-old boy taken to office after toy found, school officials say

FLORIDA CITY, Fla. – A toy gun caused a brief scare Tuesday morning at Florida City Elementary School, school administrators told Local 10 News.

Administrators found what they thought was a gun at the school at 364 NW Sixth Ave. However, it turned out to be either a BB gun or some other type of toy gun.

Administrators quickly identified the 10-year-old child, who they said brought the toy to school.

He was taken to the office. It's unclear whether he will face any kind of charges or discipline at the school.

A parent who spoke to Local 10 News reporter Derek Shore said she was unaware of the incident.

"I'm glad nothing is going on," the woman said. "I talked to a teacher just recently. She said she had heard nothing about any toy guns or anything. This is a good school. You know, my daughter just recently started going here, but her teachers are great all around. I have no problems and everything seems to be OK. But I didn't hear anything about any toy guns until I pulled up here."

Administrators said the school was not on lockdown during the isolated incident.
