Movies

Several new movies are opening this weekend. Since it's almost Halloween, let's start with the scariest of the bunch.

"The Snowman" is based on the Norwegian suspense novel written by Jo Nesbo. Michael Fassbender stars as a detective on the hunt for a mysterious serial killer with an unmistakable trademark.

"Geostorm" is a disaster film in the mold of "The Poseidon Adventure." Gerard Butler stars as a satellite designer who tries to save the world from an epic storm caused by malfunctioning climate-controlling satellites.

Sports

It's a back-to-back weekend of football at Hard Rock Stadium this weekend.

First, the eighth-ranked Miami Hurricanes (5-0, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) host Syracuse at 3:30 p.m. Saturday after another last-second victory against Georgia Tech last weekend to remain undefeated.

Miami Hurricanes wide receiver Darrell Langham makes a clutch catch late in the fourth quarter against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Oct. 14, 2017 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. Miami won 25-24.

Syracuse knocked off previously undefeated Clemson last weekend. Can the Orange play the role of spoiler two weekends in a row?

Then the Miami Dolphins (3-2, 0-1 AFC East) host the New York Jets at 1 p.m. Sunday. The last time they played, the Jets made Miami's offense look like garbage in a 20-6 road loss.

Entertainment

Carlos Mencia performs at the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek this Friday at 8 p.m., but you'll have to have tickets if you want to see him. Tickets to this event are sold out.

The Coconut Grove Pumpkin Patch Festival has a wide range of family-friendly activities. There will be a carnival, pumpkin decorating, a cornstalk maze and a scarecrow village. Beer drinkers can delight in the fall blends at the pumpkin beer garden, and there will be plenty of fair food at the pumpkin food court.

Saturday's festivities are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., while Sunday's festivities are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Tickets are $20 for general admission and $40 for VIP access per day. Children under 2 are free.

If you're headed south to the Keys this weekend, there are two big events that should be a welcome relief for the region as it recovers from Hurricane Irma.

The Humphrey Bogart Film Festival is taking place in Key Largo this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The festival is named in honor of the actor who starred in the 1948 movie "Key Largo."
This year's celebration is centered around the 75th anniversary of another Bogart classic, "Casablanca."

Farther south in Key West is the return of Fantasy Fest, which opens Friday and runs through next weekend. A slew of events are planned, including a burlesque parody of "The Wizard of Oz."
