MIAMI - "Real Housewives of Miami" star Alexia Echevarria is mourning the loss of her ex-husband, Herman Echevarria Sr.

E! News reported that the businessman was found dead Monday morning inside his room at the Epic Hotel in Miami.

Sources said the family believes he died of a heart attack.

The former Real Housewife posted a statement to Instagram later in the day, confirming his death.

"The Echevarria family is heartbroken over the sudden passing of our patriarch Herman Echevarria this morning," the statement read. "He was a family man, a hardworking businessman, dedicated to helping others and a pillar of his community that was loved by everyone who's life he touched. We ask that you please respect our privacy during this time of grieving."

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jose "Pepe" Diaz expressed his condolences on social media, praising the CEO of Venue magazine and BVK Miami.

"Friends and colleagues remember him as a mentor and a force in the business world," Diaz wrote. "He was indomitable, creative, resilient and always ready for the next challenge. There will never be another Herman. His story inspires us all. Thank you for all the great memories my brother. You will truly be missed."

Echevarria also served as a Hialeah councilman.

"The City of Hialeah family is heartbroken over the sudden passing of former Hialeah Councilman, and dear friend, Herman Echevarria," Hialeah Mayor Carlos Hernandez said in a statement. "He was a family man, a hardworking businessman, dedicated to helping others, and a true pillar in this great city in which he served from November 15, 1985 until November 14, 1997."

Hernandez said Echevarria would be remembered "for his continual commitment in contributing to the community, especially in the city of Hialeah."

"Mr. Echevarria was always dedicated to the betterment of the city, and he will be truly missed," Hernandez said.

Herman and Alexia Echevarria founded Venue magazine, where Alexia Echevarria serves as editor-in-chief.

The couple separated in 2015 and recently divorced.
