Dozens of protesters killed or detained, activists say

Social media updates show members of the Venezuelan National Guard and other supporters of Nicolas Maduro used violence Wednesday to repress protests across the country.

The first confirmed death related to the protests was Tuesday night. Dr. Jose Manual Olivares, a member of parliament in Venezuela, reported doctors at Caracas' Hospital Periferico declared 16-year-old Alixon Pizani dead after a shooting. There was also the death of 30-year-old Carlos Olivares who was shot dead in Ciudad Bolivar during a looting incident.

"There is a lot of hope in the street. I was there in the name of children without medications, in the name of the migrant refugees, in the name of the political protesters," Lorena Gil tweeted with a selfie. "I want a better Venezuela."

After Juan Guaido announced he was interim president, activists reported violence erupted in San Cristobal, Tachira and Barinas. Venezuelan government media was using the words "terrorists" and "traitors" to refer to protesters and Maduro urged his supporters to defend him.

Activists reported dozens were arrested and killed during the demonstrations, which continued Wednesday night. Foro Penal attorneys estimate at least 70 protesters remained in government custody.
