MIAMI — A leap of faith brought pastry chef Tracey Marionneaux from Chicago to South Florida, and today she’s turning Overtown into a destination for handcrafted desserts inspired by family, tradition and a little tropical flair.
Marionneaux is the owner of Sweet Revolution, where she creates everything from giant cookies and custom cakes to fresh-made beignets, all with recipes rooted in memories of her grandmother.
“I got baking from my grandmother,” Marionneaux said. “She was the cake lady in the neighborhood.”
Although her grandmother has since passed away, Marionneaux says she continues to inspire her every day.
“She’s not still with us. But I know she’s really proud of me. I know she’s smiling down on me every day. So it feels really good to continue what she started,” she said.
That passion eventually led Marionneaux to make a life-changing decision.
She left another career behind in Chicago and moved to Miami without friends or family, taking a job as a cake artist at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach.
“I moved here to Miami on a whim,” she said. “No friends and family. I got a job here at the Fontainebleau as a cake artist. And I didn’t know anyone here in the city.”
Since then, Marionneaux says both her career and confidence have grown.
“I tell people, if you want to do something, do it within reason. But do it,” she said. “It’s never going to be the right time. You’re never going to have enough money. You’re never going to have this. If you’re waiting on those things.”
Today, Sweet Revolution puts a South Florida spin on classic desserts by incorporating tropical flavors into cakes, cookies and beignets.
Marionneaux’s fresh beignets even drew comparisons to the famous pastries served in New Orleans.
Her cakes have also become a customer favorite, earning praise for their homemade taste and soft texture — a tribute, Marionneaux says, to the lessons she learned from her grandmother.
Sweet Revolution currently operates out of The Creamery at Red Rooster Overtown, where Marionneaux says customers can always expect something new.
“I love doing it. It’s a passion of mine,” she said. “I’m open to new things, new flavors. Come stop by The Creamery. You never know what kind of cake flavors we’re going to have.”
Sweet Revolution is open Saturdays and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Customers can also place custom orders by contacting the bakery through its Instagram page, @sweetrevolution20.
