PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. — NASA’s launch of a new space telescope named for astronomer Nancy Grace Roman is reigniting a question humans have asked for centuries: Is there life beyond Earth?
The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will study dark matter, distant galaxies and planets beyond our solar system. While scientists have found thousands of exoplanets, there is still no evidence that life exists anywhere other than Earth.
Scientists say some worlds could have conditions capable of supporting life, but they are far beyond human reach and have not been observed closely enough to determine whether life exists there.
The question becomes even more complicated when considering intelligent life. The Fermi paradox asks why, if intelligent civilizations could exist elsewhere in the vast universe, humanity has yet to detect clear signs of them.
Possible explanations range from civilizations destroying themselves to intelligent life choosing to remain hidden.
So, are humans alone in the universe? Scientists don’t yet have an answer. But as new telescopes and missions expand the search, the possibility of discovering signs of life remains one of science’s biggest unanswered questions.
