Rodents gnaw cabbage, roaches crawl on food prep tables; 13 businesses ordered shut

(Google Maps)

It was a particularly rough stretch for cleanliness and food safety at restaurants and food stores across South Florida.

Inspectors recently ordered 13 establishments shut, finding everything from rodent droppings and live roaches, to hundreds of flies, mold-like buildup, filthy equipment and food held at unsafe temperatures.

At Yellow Tail Subs Grill in Homestead, inspectors documented 32 violations, including live roaches crawling across a food-preparation table, among cleaned containers, and even out of a box of parchment paper used to wrap food; more than 100 roach droppings were found on a shelf.

At Pack Supermarket in Miami, inspectors found rodent droppings throughout the store, including 15 or more inside the walk-in cooler, along with gnawed cabbage bags. Records show it was the fourth time the supermarket had been ordered shut over rodent issues since October 2025.

At Pickles Pub Sandbar in Key West, inspectors reported 100 or more live flying insects landing on soda boxes, clean plates, napkins, pitchers and cups, while Tacombi in Miami was cited for dozens of rodent droppings and live flies.

Other shutdowns involved improperly cooled or stored food, unsanitary food-contact surfaces, dirty floors and equipment, and repeated pest problems.

All the places mentioned were allowed to re-open following an ordered cleanup and then a re-inspection.
